Message 🌱 Growth

«Today is a Wednesday in October that will never come again. I'm not saying this to hurry you, but to remind you that the ordinary is also one of a kind: spring pushing its way onto the balconies, the voice of someone you love, the tea going cold while you look out the window. A day being finite doesn't make it poorer. It makes it precious.»

Reflection

If today were a guest who only visits once, what would you want to offer it?

Going deeper

Existential therapy, with Irvin Yalom as one of its clearest voices, noticed something paradoxical: people who honestly face the fact that time is limited don't usually grow gloomy. They grow more present. When we live as if we had endless days, what matters gets postponed and the everyday turns into a chore to get out of the way. Finitude, seen with tenderness rather than fear, works like a magnifying glass: it enlarges what we truly care about.

You don't need a crisis to reach this clarity. Think of someone who has walked the same route to work for years, mind already in the ten o'clock meeting. One day, for no reason, they look up and see a tree in bloom that has been there every spring. Nothing extraordinary happened. They simply looked. This is what mindfulness calls deliberate attention: the ability to be where we are, even when the place seems like very little.

Nor is this about demanding constant gratitude from yourself or turning every minute into something sublime. Some days are heavy, and that's allowed. The invitation is far more modest: let one single thing today be truly seen, heard, or tasted. That small choice of attention already changes the texture of the day, because it returns the feeling of taking part in your own life instead of watching it go by.

The finite takes nothing from you. What it does is ask you to choose, and choosing, even something as simple as where to rest your gaze, is one of the quietest forms of freedom we have.
