Message ⚡ Strength

«Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is your power to choose. In that choice lies your growth and your freedom.»

Viktor Frankl

Reflection

In what situation in your life are you reacting automatically, without inhabiting that space of choice?

Going deeper

This line is usually attributed to Frankl, though there is no record of him writing it in these words. What is certainly his, and appears in Man's Search for Meaning, is the conviction that almost everything can be taken from a person except the last of the human freedoms: to choose one's attitude in whatever circumstances life brings. That is the seed of the idea, and it is a luminous invitation: even when we cannot control what happens, a small territory remains ours.

From the standpoint of logotherapy, that space is not coldness or sheer self-control. It is where meaning can appear. When we pause, we stop answering only from habit, fear, or an old wound, and we can ask ourselves which value we want to honor right now. Jung put it another way: what we cannot see ends up running us. The space is where we begin to see.

Picture an ordinary morning. Someone sends you a curt message and your chest tightens. Before you know what you thought, you have already typed something sharp. There was a tiny gap between the message and your finger. Sometimes, in that gap, there is room to notice that you slept badly, that the other person may be carrying a lot too, and that you can answer from who you want to be rather than from reflex.

This space widens with time, and it does not have to be perfect. There will be moments when we react the same old way, and even then there is room for tenderness: freedom grows more through kindness toward ourselves than through demands. Each time you notice, even a little late, you are already enlarging the gap where your freedom lives.
