«Love is the only way to grasp another human being in the innermost core of their personality. Only through love can we see the potential not yet actualized.»
Viktor Frankl
Reflection
Is there someone in your life whose potential you clearly see but they don't? How could you be a mirror of that for them today?
Going deeper
There is a quiet beauty in being seen as more than what you show. Frankl, who knew the outer limits of human experience, did not speak of love as a decorative, tender feeling but as a form of knowing: the loving gaze reaches places that analysis, judgment, and habit cannot.
For logotherapy, every person is more than their habits, their history, or their symptoms. There is a spiritual dimension in each of us: the capacity to choose a stance, to find meaning in what we live, to become something we are not yet. A gaze that only classifies cannot see that. A gaze that pauses, waits, and keeps company can. And when someone feels seen this way, something loosens: they stop defending the small image they built of themselves and dare to try on a larger one.
Think of a very ordinary scene: a coworker who always says "I'm just not creative," while you remember how she solved that problem with an idea nobody else had. Or a teenage son who believes he is messy and aimless, though you watched him spend a whole afternoon caring for his grandmother with enormous patience. These people are wearing an old label. The gaze that sees potential neither argues with the label nor forces it off; it simply lets another possibility show through.
The lovely part is that this kind of looking changes the one who looks, too. Searching for the best that beats in another person trains us to search for it in ourselves, with the same patience. Perhaps your own potential is also waiting for someone, maybe you, to look at it with a little more tenderness.
