«A full life is not one that is free of pain. It is one built in spite of it, in its name, because behind the pain there is always something you love.»

Reflection

What pain are you avoiding that, if you moved through it, would bring you closer to a fuller life?

Going deeper

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, developed by Steven Hayes and his colleagues, starts from an observation that brings relief: pain and what we value share the same root. We hurt over the absence of someone we loved, the project that didn't work out, the conversation we keep postponing, precisely because they matter to us. Seen this way, pain stops being a meaningless intruder and becomes a kind of map of your caring: it points to where the things you love are.

The trouble begins when we try not to feel. ACT calls it experiential avoidance: sidestepping uncomfortable thoughts, memories or emotions, even when the price is a life that keeps getting smaller. The relief comes quickly, fades quickly, and is paid for with places we stop visiting. The therapy doesn't ask you to grit your teeth and endure. It offers something gentler: willingness. Making room for the emotion the way you would for an awkward guest who sits down in your living room, without handing over the keys to your house.

Think of Lucía, who stopped going to her neighborhood pool after her separation, because she had always gone with her partner. Every Sunday she felt a pang in her chest when she walked past the door, and avoiding it brought calm. But it also took away the water, which she had loved since childhood. One Sunday she went in and swam a few laps, and the sadness came along. It didn't leave, but it didn't take charge either: Lucía felt the sadness and, at the same time, the warm water, her body moving, a piece of herself coming back.

In ACT, values work like a compass, not like a goal you tick off. You don't have to resolve the pain before you start walking toward them. You walk with it, and often the journey itself slowly changes it. What would be the pool in your life, the one that is waiting for you?
