Message ❤️ Love

«Once, someone looked at you and made you feel safe: a grandmother, a teacher, a friend, a voice on the other end of the phone. That presence didn't leave; it settled inside you as a secure base to step out into the day from. You don't start today alone: you carry with you the people who loved you well.»

Reflection

Who was the first person with whom you felt you could simply be yourself, and what would they say to you today if they saw you stepping into this morning?

Going deeper

John Bowlby called the person from whom a child ventures out into the world a "secure base," because the child knows they can come back. The lovely thing is that this isn't only about childhood. Adults also explore better, take more risks, and fail with less shame when we feel that someone is on our side.

Attachment research also shows that these bonds become internalized. Over the years, the voice that once soothed us becomes an inner voice. If your caregivers were imperfect, as almost all of ours were, there was very likely still someone: an aunt, a teacher, a neighbor, a friend from your teenage years. Sometimes a single secure bond is enough to plant something that lasts for decades. And if you can't find anyone in your memory, you aren't condemned to that absence: you can begin to be that presence for yourself, as Kristin Neff proposes with self-compassion.

Think of an everyday scene. You're about to walk into a meeting that makes you nervous. Instead of rehearsing everything that could go wrong, you remember your grandfather saying, "Go on, don't worry, I'll be right here." Your body registers it: your shoulders drop a little, your breath widens. The nerves don't vanish, but they're no longer alone, and that changes a great deal about how you move through them.

Today you can let that memory be company, not just a recollection. Stepping into the morning with someone inside you who believes in you is a quiet form of courage.
