Message 🕊️ Peace

«Today you don't have to perform in order to matter. There is a part of you that knows how to play: the one that watches a cloud drift by, hums without noticing, takes a shortcut just out of curiosity. That is not a luxury of childhood. It is where the most creative and alive part of you still beats.»

Reflection

What did you do as a child purely because it made you happy, without it having to be useful? What part of that has been waiting for you?

Going deeper

The pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott held that play is not a pastime of childhood but one of the deepest ways we have of feeling alive. Play happens in an in-between space, between what we imagine and what the world offers us, where nothing is at stake and so everything becomes possible.

As the years go by, many of us learn to justify every minute: if it isn't useful, if it doesn't pay off, if it can't be shown, better not to do it. Winnicott warned that when life becomes pure adaptation to what is expected of us, a dull sense of unreality appears, the feeling of going through the motions without being fully present. It isn't a personal flaw. It is what happens when spontaneity goes too long without coming out.

Think of someone who hums while cooking, gives the dog a funny voice, or doodles in the margins of a notebook during a phone call. That isn't distraction. It is the true self peeking out for a moment. These are tiny gestures, but they bring back the sense that this life is ours, and not just a list of tasks.

Play requires neither talent nor hours of free time. It asks only for permission. And that permission is an act of tenderness toward yourself: a reminder that you don't have to earn everything. Today, a little while of play might be the simplest way to come home.
