Message 🌱 Growth

«"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." With October saying goodbye, you don't need to demand anything new of yourself today. You can begin by welcoming yourself exactly as you arrived at this morning.»

Carl Rogers

Reflection

What would change in your day if you stopped arguing with who you are and asked yourself, with curiosity, what you need?

Going deeper

Carl Rogers spent decades listening to people in his consulting room, and he arrived at an observation that sounds counterintuitive: change doesn't come from pressure, it comes from acceptance. When someone feels understood without being judged, they stop spending energy on defending themselves. That energy is freed up for something far more fertile: looking, wondering, growing.

Accepting yourself isn't resignation, and it isn't saying "that's just how I am." It means looking honestly at where you stand today, including what is hard for you, without piling a layer of reproach on top. It is the difference between "I snapped at my daughter, I'm a terrible mother" and "I snapped, I was exhausted, and I want to make it right." The first sentence paralyzes; the second gives you a direction. Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion points the same way: people who treat themselves kindly find it easier to admit their mistakes and do something about them.

Think of that task you keep putting off. If every time you see it you tell yourself "I'm so lazy," the task becomes soaked in shame, and avoiding it feels even more tempting. But if you say "I find it hard to start; what would make this easier?", a small first step appears: open the file, tidy the desk, work for ten minutes. Acceptance doesn't switch off the wish to change; it lifts the weight off it.

So today, try welcoming yourself the way you'd welcome someone you love who walks in looking tired: no lecture, maybe something warm to drink. From there, whatever in you wants to transform will have more room to do so, at its own pace, without you having to shove it along.
