Message ❤️ Love

«Today you will leave a mark on someone without ever knowing it: with a greeting at the bakery, with the patience you bring to listening, with a shared laugh. Irvin Yalom calls this the rippling effect: what we do travels much farther than we can see. Nothing extraordinary is needed; the way you show up is already a pebble dropped into water.»

Reflection

If your presence were a ripple spreading outward today, what would you like it to carry?

Going deeper

Irvin Yalom, the existential psychiatrist, writes about the "rippling effect": each of us creates circles of influence that spread outward, often without our knowing, reaching people we may never meet. He saw it in his clinical work. Facing mortality, many people found comfort in knowing that something of them would live on in others, whether a phrase, a way of caring, or an attitude toward life.

The idea is luminous because it changes the question. We tend to measure ourselves with "have I achieved enough?", which weighs heavily and is never fully satisfied. The rippling effect asks something else: "how am I touching what I touch?" That doesn't demand greatness. Think of someone who once told you "you're good at this" and you still remember it decades later. That person probably doesn't even recall saying it. That's how ripples work: whoever makes them rarely sees how far they go.

In everyday life it happens constantly. A neighbor greets you warmly, or someone at the corner shop asks how you are and genuinely waits for the answer. Something in you loosens, and you get home with a little more patience. That patience is a ripple that kept traveling. You are both receiver and source, even if you rarely notice it.

Keeping this in mind is not a burden or a demand to be perfect. It is permission to value the small. Even on hard days it counts: that you keep yourself going, that you ask for help, that you treat yourself with some tenderness shows others it can be done. Today, without any heroic effort, your presence already matters.
