«What you admire in other people —their calm, their humor, the way they say no without guilt— is often a seed of your own that hasn't had enough sun yet. It isn't missing; it's stored away, waiting for a little permission. Today you can look at that admiration tenderly, as a clue to what you already carry inside.»

Reflection

Which quality in another person has stirred your admiration lately, and what might happen if you asked yourself where it already lives in you, even in a small version?

Going deeper

Carl Jung used the word projection for the way we place on others what we have not yet recognized in ourselves. We usually think of it in terms of the uncomfortable: the thing that irritates us about a neighbor and, looked at closely, feels oddly familiar. But projection works with light too. Some Jungian writers speak of a "golden shadow": the abilities, talents, and ways of being that, for various reasons, we learned to keep in the basement.

Think of an everyday example. You admire a coworker because in meetings she says "I see it differently" with complete ease, no apology attached. Maybe you grew up in a home where caring for others meant staying quiet, and you learned that speaking up risked affection. That admiration isn't telling you "I can't." It's telling you "I have that too, I just put it away a long time ago."

None of this is about becoming someone else or comparing yourself in order to lose. Jung understood individuation as a slow process of becoming more whole, and wholeness is built from small gestures. An opinion shared in a conversation with few consequences. A pause taken without asking permission. A laugh you let yourself have. Each gesture tells that stored-away part of you that it is now safe to come out.

The next time you feel admiration, try registering it as a kind clue rather than a measure of what you lack. The person who inspires you is showing you, without knowing it, a piece of your own map. And you can start walking it today, at your own pace.
