Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist and concentration camp survivor, proposed something that changed how we think about human motivation: meaning is not something life owes us, but a question life asks us. Instead of wondering "what do I expect from life?", he invited us to turn it around: "what does life expect from me, today, in this concrete situation?"
The beautiful thing is that this question rarely asks for anything grand. Frankl described three paths to meaning: what we give to the world through our work or our deeds, what we receive by experiencing something or loving someone, and the attitude we take toward what we cannot change. All three fit into an ordinary Friday.
Think of someone cooking for their family after a long day. They can do it on autopilot, as one more chore, or they can notice that this stew is a way of saying "you matter to me." The task is identical; what changes is that it now has a direction. And psychologically, direction works as relief: whatever has a "what for" weighs less, even if it costs the same effort.
This isn't about demanding that every minute be transcendent; that would only be another burden. It's about lifting your eyes now and then and recognizing where you're headed. Today, with the month about to end, you may already be living more meaning than you think. It just needs a name.
