«"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few." Today you can give yourself that freshness without changing a thing in your routine: all it takes is looking at what's familiar as if it were the first time. The simplest parts of your day may still have something to show you.»

Shunryu Suzuki

Reflection

What part of your life do you look at so often that you've stopped seeing it? What if it still had something new to tell you?

Going deeper

Shunryu Suzuki, the Zen teacher, wrote this line in "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind." He isn't praising ignorance; he's pointing to openness, the willingness not to take for granted what we think we already know. Our brain is remarkably efficient, and whatever we repeat, it automates to save energy. That lets us tie our shoes or drive without thinking through every movement, but it carries a quiet cost: we stop seeing exactly what's right in front of us.

In mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn calls this "autopilot." Think of the block you've walked for years. One day someone asks what color the door on the corner is, and you can't say. That's not carelessness or a lack of sensitivity; it's simply how attention works. The good news is that getting freshness back doesn't require changing your life, traveling far, or doing anything extraordinary. It asks for a small shift in how you look.

Beginner's mind isn't about pretending to be amazed, nor about denying what you've learned. It's about setting down, for a moment, the "I already know how this goes," which we apply to routines but also to people: the one who lives with you, your coworkers and, above all, yourself. Telling yourself "that's just how I am" is a kind of expertise about yourself that closes doors. Treating yourself as someone who can still surprise you makes room to grow.

So today, try a gentle curiosity. Maybe what's new wasn't far away at all: it has been right there for a while, waiting for someone to look at it with first-time eyes.
