Psychologist Edward Tronick's research on mothers and infants showed something that changed how we think about bonds: even in pairs that get along well, attunement is lost a good part of the time. What builds security is not constant harmony, but finding each other again after a mismatch. That experience of «it broke and we fixed it» teaches the brain that relationships can hold conflict.
This logic stays with us as adults. We tend to think a misunderstanding or a long silence is proof that the bond is over, and shame or pride holds us back. From attachment theory, repair is an act of trust: you're telling the other person, «you matter more to me than being right.» It doesn't require a perfect speech; often an honest, simple gesture is enough.
Picture Marta, who argued with her sister at a birthday and since then each has been waiting for the other to make the first move. Weeks go by and the silence grows heavier than the argument itself. One Friday, Marta sends a photo of grandmother's old cup with «I thought of you today.» Her sister answers with a three-minute voice message. They haven't settled everything, but the door has opened again.
Repairing doesn't mean giving in or erasing what hurt: it means choosing to keep the bond a place where conversation is possible. And even if the reply is slow or never comes, the gesture still takes care of you, because it reminds you of who you want to be. Kristin Neff would say to speak to yourself in that attempt with the same tenderness you'd offer a friend: taking the step is already an act of courage.
